Coronavirus

Dear Parents and Guardians.

As you are aware on Monday 16th March 2020, the Prime Minister advised that all should avoid contact with others and maintain social distancing.

As of Tuesday 17th March 2020, the decision was made by HQ that face to face scouting will be suspended until further notice. This suspension applies to both our young people and adult members. We will continue to follow guidance from official channels such as Public Health England, the Scout Association and any other government bodies.

Closing Scouting was always worst case scenario for us, however we have to follow advice. I know you will have lots of questions and concerns, as a District Manager and Executive Team we are setting up a Question and Answer document of which will be sent to all group leaders by tomorrow, Friday 20th March 2020.

Once we have been given the go ahead to restart face to face scouting this will be communicated to you via group leaders.

If you have any further questions, please direct them to the Group Leadership in the first instance, if they are unable to offer a response, they will be forwarded onto myself and I will answer as quickly as I can. As soon as the situation calms to where we can make more long term plans, I will update you on what has been agreed and what we are doing going forward. Thankyou for your patience and understanding in this matter.

Please stay healthy and look after each other.

Yours in scouting,
Phil Sumner

Tim Kidd (The Chief Commissioner for Scouts UK) has provided a statement to all members advising that, in accordance with the latest advice from the UK Government and Public Health England, all face to face Scouting activities are to be cancelled until further notice. In practice this means there will be no Section meetings, camps or other events.

Current events are unprecedented and rapidly developing, as such we cannot currently say how long this will last. Further updates will be provided here when available and Group leaders will be in touch with revised plans for any events already in the calendar. Some Groups will be offering alternative programmes such as online activities and ideas for badgework that can be done in the meantime.

If you have any questions or concerns in relation to this or anything else related to Scouting please don't hesitate to contact your Group leaders or the Stockport District team at enquiries@stockportscouts.org.uk.

Kind regards,
Stockport Scouts

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As you are all no doubt aware; the global situation that is currently affecting all areas of everyday life, COVID-19, is having a serious impact nationally. In recent days several events have been cancelled due to fears of the virus spreading.

As a district, we have reviewed the situation and will continue to do so. I would therefore like to inform you of the current stance and what to expect if the situation develops further. We take the safety and health of all our members seriously, therefore we will be following the same advice that has been given out by Public Health England to schools and workplaces.

Do not send your child to a meeting or event if they show the symptoms of highlighted by the government as a cause for concern.
• a cough
• fever (a high temperature)
• shortness of breath
If your child does show any of these symptoms please self-isolate for 7 days as per Public Health England advice.

If your child’s school is closed because of a potential outbreak of COVID-19 then we ask you do not send them to a meeting or event. In this case the District Team will make a decision with local groups that could mean the groups themselves could close.

As you are aware as of today, Thursday 12th March 2020, the government entered the ‘Delay’ stage. The District Team have risk assessed all events that are due to take place this weekend, and will continue to risk asses all events in the coming days, following advice from the government and The Scout Association. If we do need to cancel any events or meetings we will communicate with the group leaders, who in turn will inform all parents and guardians.

We ask that you communicate with your Group Leaders for information about issues that may arise because of these decisions, but as this is a fast moving development globally as well as locally we need to be vigilant. Please inform us if your child is asked to self isolate as we may be required to take action ourselves. Please be assured that information supplied to us will remain confidential.

For the very latest information, visit the following Government websites: www.gov.uk/government/organisations/public-healthengland

I would like to thank all parents who have made enquiries regarding this situation, and would like to inform you that we are looking into matters that involve loss of money on these issues and where possible we will offer refunds where the virus has caused a loss.

If your child has to self isolate, we will ensure their place is reserved at their group until they are able to return.

Yours in scouting,
Phil Sumner
